The Joint CAS/SOA Committee on Actuarial Diversity sponsors university-run summer programs for minority high school students interested in math and actuarial science at Illinois State University, Howard University, Morgan State University and West Chester University.
Lebanon Valley College has had a successful actuarial science program for more than 40 years, and has run an actuarial summer camp for more than two decades. The Lebanon Valley College programs have open enrollment and desire a very diverse student population.
Frontiers at WPI is a residential, on-campus summer program for high school students that challenges participants to explore the outer limits of their knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with current laboratory techniques and exploring unsolved problems across a wide spectrum of disciplines. In addition to learning directly from WPI professors and graduate students, participants will enjoy added activities such as evening workshops, field trips, movies, live performances, and tournaments. Throughout each session, teens will focus on one STEM discipline and enroll in one humanities workshop of their choice. For students interested in becoming an Actuary or learning more about Actuarial Science, Frontiers offers the Introduction to Actuarial and Financial Mathematics track during the Frontiers II session (July 23- August 4, 2017). This workshop is designed to give participants an immersive experience in actuarial and financial mathematics topics. The program begins with an introduction to a fundamental actuarial topic, the theory of interest, and some key concepts in probability. Then participants will learn about bonds and bond pricing, stocks and the stock market, and options and option pricing. Particular attention will be paid to the mathematical modeling of financial securities. Participants hear from professionals in the field, as guest speakers share their experiences at various corporations.
