The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and Society of Actuaries (SOA) recently hosted a Be an Actuary Day event in conjunction with Temple University in Philadelphia. Be An Actuary Day is a program developed to expose diverse high school students to the actuarial profession as a career choice by giving them the opportunity to meet actuarial science students and practicing actuaries.

Over 125 students from 8 different schools in the Philadelphia area participated in the interactive event, supported by more than 40 actuarial volunteers and Temple University students. The day began with volunteers sharing their personal experiences as actuaries, followed by engaging problem-solving exercises simulating real-world risk scenarios. The event concluded with a challenging math game and closing remarks from representatives of Temple's Actuarial Science Program. Additionally, resources from organizations such as The Actuarial Foundation, the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA), and the Organization of Latino Actuaries (OLA) were offered to attendees, including students, teachers, and chaperones.

“Volunteering on Be An Actuary Day 2024 at Temple University was a tremendously rewarding experience for me,” said event volunteer Helen Davidson, Senior Actuarial Analyst at AmTrust Financial. “It is a privilege to be able to teach young folks about the actuarial field, especially when they otherwise would likely never learn what an actuary is. There are so many talented high school students just waiting to be told about our career, and this day helps us plant the seeds for the next generation of actuaries. This event is remarkable not only in it’s potential to connect young folks with the best career in the world (I’m not biased), but that the fruit from these efforts will foster a diverse candidate pool in the not-too-distant future, and I for one can’t wait to see what these students will bring to the table.”
